Photos: Church Building: 1839 1883(present) Tiffany Studio window c. 1888
At a meeting held at the home of Elisha Watson, Jr. on the evening of February 28, 1839, a resolution was passed unanimously by a group of interested persons "to establish an Episcopal Church in the Village of Wakefield" to be called the Church of the Ascension. That first church was a wooden frame building standing about one half mile from the corner on which the church now stands and was consecrated on Ascension Day, June 3, 1840. The present church was built on the present site and consecrated in June 1883.
Additions made later include the parish hall in 1950 and the Memorial Building, which houses the church offices, parish library and conference room, in 1982.
The nave of the church is adorned with stained glass Windows from the Tiffany and Lafarge studios. These were given to the glory of God and as memorials to early founders, communicants and rectors of the parish.
In 1988 a memorial carillon was added, which rings daily as witness to the presence of God reaching out from this parish to the surrounding community. The interior of the church, especially, the sanctuary, has undergone various transformations over the years, the latest being in 1997.
